Power companies offer tips to save energy, money

When winter’s chill arrives, local power providers are suggesting a number of tips to keep it from impacting your power bill.

Todd Burns, corporate communications official for Appalachian Power, said customers can save themselves from experiencing the sudden spike in power prices that usually comes with winter heating by subscribing to one of their payment plans.

“The best plan is called AMP or Average Monthly Payment plan,” said Burns. “It basically erases the peaks or spikes out of your electric bill by using the 12-month rolling average instead of your actual usage.”

Home improvement is another chore that Burns suggests to help consumers keep a step ahead of the chill.

Suggestions for making the household more winter friendly and energy efficient include:

— Caulk, seal and weatherstrip openings from your home to the outside.

— Have your furnace and ductwork inspected annually. Loose, broken AC ductwork accounts for 15 percent to 35 percent of a home’s energy loss.

— Change furnace filters every month.

— Repair and weatherstrip air leaks in the home.

— Unless it is equipped specifically for home heating, use your fireplace sparingly. Warm air escapes through the chimney. Close the damper when you’re not using your fireplace.

The Tennessee Valley Authority also has tips for cost cutting during the winter, including:

— Turn down your heating system’s thermostat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit or even lower if no one is home for several days.

— Keep curtains open on the south side of the house and closed on the north side during the day.

— Use area rugs if you have hardwood or tile floors to keep your feet warm.
