CLINTWOOD - The Virginia State Police is in charge of two separate shooting incidents, one fatal, involving deputies in Dickenson and Grayson counties.
The VSP's Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Wytheville Field Office is investigating an ultimately fatal shooting incident that occurred just after midnight, or very early Tuesday. The VSP reported the Dickenson County Sheriff's Office received a call of an assault at a residence in the 100 block of Paul Stanley Road, located in the Caney Ridge section of Dickenson County near the border with Wise County.
When a deputy arrived and confronted the suspect involved in the reported assault, the VSP said 60-year old Gary Dean Carty of Clintwood brandished a knife and charged at the officer. The deputy fired his weapon, wounding Carty.
Carty was flown by the VSP Med-Flight II helicopter to Bristol Regional Medical Center where he later died of his injuries.
The other incident occurred just before 8 p.m. Monday in Grayson County, after the Grayson County Sheriff's Office received a tip that Randy Lee Anders, 32, of Mouth of Wilson, was at a residence in the 2200 block of Grassy Creek Road.
Anders had active warrants for his arrest for violating probation and a capias for failing to appear in court. Anders also allegedly made threatening comments saying he would not be taken alive by law enforcement, according to the VSP.
After receiving consent from the homeowner to a search, deputies located Anders in the basement. As the deputies approached Anders, the VSP said Anders aimed a handgun at the deputies who opened fire.
Anders was flown by VSP Med-Flight II to Bristol Regional Medical Center where he was last reported being treated in the intensive care unit, according to the VSP.
None of the deputies, who have not been identified by the VSP, in either incident were injured. At the conclusion of the separate investigations the findings will be turned over to the commonwealth's attorney in each of the two counties for final review and adjudication.
