KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Dobyns-Bennett High School student Joshua B. Young, son of Brent and Anna Young, has been honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a President's Volunteer Service Award.
The award, which recognizes young people across America who have volunteered significant amounts of time to serve their communities and county, was presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama.
Young earned this award by accumulating over 134 volunteer hours throughout his high school career. He is a TN/VA Scholar which requires a minimum of 80 community service hours before high school graduation. Young's mother, Anna, attributes his service-oriented spirit for his love of helping others. "Josh is always the first one out the door to assist those in need," she said.
Recipients of Young's service include: Eagle Scout projects for John Sevier Middle School, Children's Advocacy Center, City of Kingsport, and Kingsport City Schools; assisting with refurbishing buildings for St. Dominic's Catholic Church; trash pickup for the City of Maryville; singing to the elderly at Bristol Senior Center; clean-ups at Lynn View Middle School, Model City garage, and Warriors Path State Park Boundless playground; volunteered hours at the Hammond House; Greenbelt plantings; helped moved several individuals and assisted in the tornado relief for Glade Springs, VA.
Since receiving the award, Young has helped blaze a trail at a 4-H Club in Greenville, Tenn. and has assisted with several moves for community families, adding 15 more hours of service. In April, he plans to participate again in the annual Day of Service at the Boundless Playground at Warrior's Path, adding approximately 10 additional hours.
By graduation of May 2013, Young is expected to have more than 160 volunteer service hours.
"Dobyns-Bennett is very proud of the service Mr. Young has provided back to the Kingsport community," said Dr. Chris Hampton, principal, Dobyns-Bennett High School. "Recognition by the Prudential organization is quite the honor for both Josh and Dobyns-Bennett."
Sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program has recognized more than 370,000 young people across America for their community service since the program began in 1995.
"The recipients of these awards vividly demonstrate that young people are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities," said John R. Strangfeld, chairmen and CEO of Prudential Financial. "In recognizing these students and placing a spotlight on their volunteer service activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also contribute to their community."
"Demonstrating civic responsibility through community volunteerism is an important part of life," said NASSP Executive Director, JoAnn Bartoletti. "These honorees practice a lesson we hope all young people, as well as adults, will emulate."
