Man 'drunk on moonshine' flips car in Rogersville

Sullivan County Sheriff's Office

Jan. 5

A woman requested a welfare check for her 14-year-old daughter on Bloomingdale Road, claiming the girl's stepmother had, "threatened to put rat poison in her food." Police responded to find all was OK.

Jan. 6

A man reported concern for an elderly woman on Windy Hills Road, who he had not heard from in several days. An officer responded to find the woman was intoxicated and, "did not want to be disturbed." She shut her home's door in the deputy's face.

Jan. 7

Police were called to an alleged assault against a reportedly disabled man on Bristol Caverns Highway. The victim said he told a neighbor, "to take better care of his kids," prompting the neighbor to push him off a porch.

Jan. 10

A pair of girls, ages 15 and 16, allegedly took a Buick from Buttermilk Road. The caller claimed neither of the suspects have a license.

Hawkins County Sheriff's Office

Jan. 6

A Church Hill woman reported going to her ex-boyfriend's home to find him drinking. She told police they later went riding around, in her husband's car, with the woman's ex-boyfriend driving. He reportedly became enraged, choking her and threatening to kill her. When they returned to his residence he "acted" like he threw the vehicle's keys in the weeds, forcing her to search for them over an "extended period of time." He eventually handed them over and she left and contacted police, who saw no visible signs of an assault and took no action.

Jan. 8

Police responded to a fight between two brothers on Caney Valley Loop, finding both with scrapes and cuts. The men, each in their late 40s, appeared intoxicated but a primary aggressor could not be determined. Both were charged with domestic assault and arrested.

A BOLO was issued for a possibly intoxicated driver on Highway 11-E. A deputy observed the suspect's car, speeding and crossing the center line, and conducted a stop. As the officer walked towards the car, according to a police report, the driver opened his door and stated, "You got me officer, I'm driving drunk." He was arrested and charged with DUI, an offense he's been convicted of three previous times.

Jan. 9

A Church Hill man reported that during his divorce he was awarded a yard barn, which someone has now vandalized by writing "watch your back" across the side in black paint.

Jan. 10

At approximately 3 a.m. police were dispatched to a crash on Highway 70 North in Rogersville. A witness stated the driver of a Chevrolet Cavalier — which had left the roadway and flipped — had exited the car and ran from the scene. Police located the suspect, 23, in the backyard of a nearby home. He allegedly admitted to being "drunk on moonshine" — consuming half a quart of the past two hours — and leaving the roadway at more than 70 mph. He was arrested.
