ROGERSVILLE — One of the region’s most prolific alleged “smash and grab” convenience store burglars was indicted earlier this month on 13 counts in Hawkins County, but he faces dozens more charges in other jurisdictions.
Christopher Timothy Allen Covington, 21, 3111 Norman Drive, Morristown, was arrested Aug. 6 after an alleged attempted burglary at a market in the St. Clair community of Hawkins County.
Hawkins County deputies and Rogersville police responded to a burglary alarm at the store located at the intersection of Melinda Ferry Road and Route 113.
When police arrived the suspects were gone. While officers were on the scene, however, a vehicle passed that was identified by witnesses as being the attempted burglar’s getaway car.
Police stopped the car and arrested Covington as well as a female driver who was facing charges as getaway driver in multiple smash and grab burglaries.
At the time of his arrest Hawkins County Sheriff Ronnie Lawson said Covington was cooperating with investigators across the region including the Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office and the Morristown Police Department that were expected to charge Covington with at least 25 smash and grab burglaries combined.
Covington is also suspected of smash and grabs in Greene and Grainger counties, as well as Bean Station.
On Dec. 10 the Hawkins County grand jury indicted Covington on six counts of burglary, three counts of theft under $500, two counts of vandalism over $1,000, and two counts of vandalism over $500.
As of Dec. 20, Covington remained lodged in the Hawkins County Jail without bond with a trial date set for Feb. 11.
