GATE CITY — A Gate City man received traumatic injuries Friday after he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross West Jackson Street.

Albert Bishop, 34, was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport for treatment following the accident, which happened on the 800 block of West Jackson Street shortly before 1 p.m.

The Gate City Police Department initially responded to the incident but turned the investigation over to the Virginia State Police due to the severity of Bishop’s injuries.

Bishop was listed in critical condition at HVMC Friday afternoon.

According to the VSP, the driver of the 1991 Ford Escort that struck Bishop was not at fault in the incident and will not face charges.

Speed was also not a factor, authorities said, since the driver of the Escort was traveling the speed limit when Bishop was hit.

Authorities said Bishop apparently walked in front of the vehicle, and the driver did not have time to react before striking him.

Authorities said they are still investigating exactly why Bishop crossed the street when he did and whether or not he was thrown by the car when he was struck.
