KFD Station 8 receives award

KINGSPORT — Kingsport Fire Department Station 8 has received an award from Fire Chief Magazine for architecture and design among U.S. fire departments.

The station was recognized by the Fire Chief Magazine 2012 Station Style Design Awards in the Career Notable category.

According to a press release from KFD Public Education Officer Barry J Brickey, this station came about through a lot of work with the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Aldermen and City Manager John Campbell, and the dedicated efforts of KFD staff, Project Manager Capt. Shea Payne, Assistant Chief Scott Boyd, Engineer Joel Moore and Engineer Jr. Swinney. After identifying the needs of the department and the city, KFD staff sought the guidance of the architects for the project, Beeson, Lusk & Street Inc., and those ideas were incorporated into the station design.

The 7,414-square-foot Station 8 was completed by Armstrong Construction Co. in May of 2012 and serves the East Stone Drive, Preston Forest, Crown Colony and Orebank corridors. The facility provides not only fire and medical response but also a substation for the Kingsport Police Department.

“It is an honor just to be nationally recognized, especially for the second time. We put in a lot of work and effort and it will serve this city well for many years to come.” Capt. Payne said.
