Wendy Welch is the final speaker in the Washington County Public Library's "Appalachian Homecoming" series. She will discuss her book, "The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap," Sunday Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. at the main library in Abingdon.
Her novel tells the story of how two people, two cats, two dogs and 38,000 books helped a small town find its heart. It is a story about people and books, and how they work together to create community.
Welch is co-owner of The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap with her husband, Jack Beck. She is also a storyteller, musician, author and teaches anthropology at the University of Virginia at Wise.
"This heartwarming and charming story of community is the perfect ending to this year's series," says Will Stein, reference library. "And community, friends and neighbors are things we should all think about during the holiday season."
The Appalachian Homecoming series explores our region's history, heritage and culture and attempts to dispel many of the myths and misconceptions about our area.
