NWS: Substantial snow possible in higher elevations
Substantial snow accumulations across Northeast Tennessee will be limited to the higher elevations today, according to the National Weather Service Forecasting Station in Morristown, with possible morning snow showers in Sullivan County transitioning to rain by the afternoon.
Early Tuesday morning the NWS reported snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches were possible in Kingsport, Rogersville, Bristol and the surrounding counties, mainly in the higher elevations. Highs were expected to in the in the upper 30s and lowers 40s.
Forecasters said snow showers will likely return tonight in Sullivan, Hawkins, Washington and Greene counties, with total snow accumulation of about 4 inches in higher elevations. Wednesday is expected to be partly sunny with a chance of snow in the morning and chance of rain in the afternoon.
A winter storm warning is in effect until 8 a.m. Wednesday for Scott, Lee, Russell and Washington counties in Southwest Virginia. Tuesday snow showers were expected to bring 1 to 3 inches of accumulation, with higher elevations possibly receiving 10 inches. The NWS said highs will be in the lower to mid 30s.
Snow showers are likely for those areas tonight, with less than an inch of additional accumulation in the valleys and up to 4 more inches in higher elevations. NWS forecasters say elevations above 2,500 feet in Southwest Virginia could see up to 26 inches of total snow accumulation. Precipitation on Wednesday expected to be in the form of rain.
A blizzard warning is in effect for Wise County, Va., until 8 a.m. Wednesday. Up to 8 inches of snow could land today in the higher elevations, with snow showers at times limiting visibility to less than a quarter of a mile at times. The NWS expects total accumulation of 5 inches in the valleys of Wise and the possibility of 20 inches in the higher elevations.
