CLINTWOOD — Former Gov. George Allen, 9th District Congressman Morgan Griffith and state Delegate Will Morefield, R-Tazewell, are scheduled to attend today’s Energy Expo at the Dickenson County Center for Education and Research in Clintwood.
Allen, Griffith and Morefield will arrive at 8:45 a.m. to meet miners competing in the mine rescue and pre-shift competitions and will tour the Expo as time permits.
The Dickenson Center for Education and Research is hosting its first-ever Energy Expo. Open to the public, the event features a diverse schedule of activities including a mine rescue contest, pre-shift contest, mine foreman training, mine rescue breathing apparatus training, electrical repairman review, and a career day event for Dickenson County students.
Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals & Energy Deputy Director Butch Lambert said the event “initiates what county, education and industry leaders hope will be an annual event designed to share information with the public about the region’s energy-related industries.”
Lambert said another important element of the Expo is the inclusion of a career day for Dickenson County middle and high school students “to learn about potential job opportunities in the energy production business sector.”
The Expo will also feature exhibits by coal, oil and gas industry vendors, the Dickenson County school division, community colleges, and industry representatives. Sponsors include the DMME, Virginia Mining Association and the Virginia Oil and Gas Association.
Events will begin at 7:30 a.m. The Dickenson Center for Education and Research is located at 818 Happy Valley Drive in Clintwood.
