GATE CITY — A Kingsport man was indicted on drug distribution charges in Scott County this week following his arrest earlier this summer for allegedly receiving a package of marijuana weighing nearly 50 pounds through the mail.
Ramon Ibis Lopez, no age given, 1035 Gravely Road, Lot 10, Kingsport, was indicted on charges of possession of over 5 pounds of marijuana and transporting more than 5 pounds of marijuana over state lines.
Each charge is considered a Class U felony and carries a possible sentence of five to 40 years in prison.
Lopez was arrested by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office in June after being pulled over on Highway 23 in Weber City and allegedly found with approximately 47 pounds of marijuana in a box in his car.
At the time of his arrest, Lopez was fleeing across the state line from officers with the Kingsport Police Department and U.S. Postal Inspection Service after he allegedly received the package through the mail.
Scott County Commonwealth’s Attorney Marcus McClung said Lopez would likely be extradited to Tennessee to face charges following his prosecution in Virginia.
Lopez was one of 18 people indicted on 61 charges Tuesday by a Scott County grand jury.
