CHURCH HILL — A Kingsport man learned Wednesday evening that shooting a full-grown runaway bull with a .22 rifle will only make it angry.

About 8 p.m. Wednesday, Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Josh Byrd was dispatched to a residence on Tipton Lane near Church Hill where a fully matured longhorn bull was located in a yard belonging to Ira Wilmoth.

Wilmoth said the bull had escaped its field into his yard on several occasions.

Byrd confirmed he had been dispatched to that residence more than once for that reason.

The owner of the bull, Patrick Bone of Bell Ridge Drive in Kingsport, was also called to the Tipton Lane residence.

“I asked Mr. Bone how he intended placing the bull inside the field where it belongs,” Byrd stated in his report. “Mr. Bone stated there was no way it could be done, and he wished to shoot the animal.”
