CHURCH HILL -- A Kingsport woman is facing several charges including reckless endangerment after being arrested for DUI Sunday evening in Church Hill with two small children and 11 syringes in the vehicle.

Hawkins County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Chris Funk said he was patrolling Highway 11-W in Church Hill when he observed an eastbound Ford Crown Victoria "cross the center line and enter a deep median twice within 100 yards."

Funk activated his blue lights and followed the vehicle for about a quarter mile before it stopped near the Silver Lake Road intersection.

Funk said the driver, Laura Marie Cantor, 33, 1977 Blairs Gap Road, Kingsport, failed to perform field sobriety tests "in a manner to operate a motor vehicle."

After failing the tests, Cantor allegedly became "belligerent" and had to be placed in restraints by Funk and Church Hill Police Department Officer Bryan Pellegrino, who had also responded to the traffic stop.

Both of Cantor's small children were in the vehicle in their booster seats, Funk added.

While searching the vehicle, officers found a black bag on the passenger side floor that allegedly contained 11 syringes, three spoons, and two bottles of an unknown liquid. One of the spoons reportedly contained a white residue.

Cantor refused to submit to a blood draw.

Aside from reckless endangerment, she was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, DUI, violation of the implied consent law, driving left of center, and a vehicle registration violation.

As of Monday evening, Cantor remained held in the Hawkins County jail on $10,000 bond.
