A Kingsport business owner accused of pocketing customers' payments on utility terrain vehicles has been charged with an additional count of felony theft, with police saying they're still getting calls from possible victims.
Glen Allen Courtney Jr., 34, of 695 Westhills Drive, Rogersville, was originally arrested July 25 by Kingsport police. Courtney, the owner of Extreme Power Sports on Tyson Drive, had his entire stock of UTVs repossessed — along with those of two customers — after allegedly failing to pass along payments to the manufacturer, XY Powersports.
At the time of his July arrest Courtney was charged with one count of theft of more than $10,000 but less than $60,000. KPD Det. Martin Taylor reports that last week Courtney was charged with an additional count, booked into jail and released on $5,000 bond.
The two charges are related to seven UTVs in total. In late July two customers' vehicles were repossessed while undergoing repairs at Courtney's business, prompting them to contact police. Detectives say a preliminary investigation has identified five additional incidents of the manufacturer not being compensated for vehicles sold, with Courtney failing to provide the buyers their titles.
Taylor reports Courtney entered a contract with XY Powersports in December of 2011. The manufacturer stopped receiving invoices for equipment in March, prompting the repossession of his stock and the other UTVs on site. Taylor says Courtney has been unable to provide paperwork for other alleged transactions.
An investigation into Courtney's business practices are ongoing with additional charges pending. Anyone who believes they may have been victimized is asked to contact KPD detectives at (423) 229-9429 or (423) 229-9357.
