Thirty-two after-hours emergencies. Eighty-seven during business hours. Eleven hospitalizations. Numerous interrupted suicide attempts.
It all adds up to increasing mental health concerns among East Tennessee State University students and a correlating demand for the university's professional counseling services. The stresses of school, independence, finances, family and relationships all factor into the equation, and the university's counseling services have been stretched by the spike in needs.
ETSU Counseling Center Director Steve Brown says the center needs more resources to meet that demand.
