KINGSPORT - AT&T officially launched its 4G LTE wireless network in Kingsport and Bristol in Sullivan County Friday. The network service area now covers the entire Tri-Cities.
AT&T says the technology is capable of delivering mobile Internet faster than ever before.
“For many consumers, especially rural residents with access to only satellite and dial-up broadband service, 4G LTE service provides an affordable high speed Internet access that fits their needs and provides fast Internet speeds like those available in larger cities,” said Alan Hill, AT&T regional director. “For consumers living in suburban and urban areas with more high speed broadband service options, 4G LTE affords new competitive high speed broadband choices.”
In a release, AT&T says the company invested nearly $1.4 billion in its Tennessee wireless and wireline networks from 2010 through 2012, with a focus on expanding 4G LTE mobile Internet coverage and enhancing the overall performance of its networks.
“Sullivan County is thriving and is a great place to do business,” Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville, said in the AT&T release. “This announcement proves that updating our laws to keep up with changing technology pays off. AT&T’s investment and launch of 4G LTE reflects their confidence in our county and adds next generation capabilities for our businesses, travelers and consumers.”
Other Northeast Tennessee lawmakers also praised the new service launch.
“This is an investment for the future in Sullivan County,” said state Rep. Jon Lundberg, R-Bristol. “In an information–driven economy, the ability for the people of Kingsport and Bristol to have access to the latest communications technology is critical.”
Kingsport Chamber of Commerce CEO Miles Burdine also commented: “Thanks to the leadership of our state delegation and elected officials, we are seeing companies invest in technology which is essential for recruiting employees here in Sullivan County. Bristol and Kingsport have both had reputations as progressive cities that are great places to start or expand a business. This announcement serves to underscore that we are open for business with the most modern wireless infrastructure to support our community.”
