ROGERSVILLE -- A Hawkins County couple were told Monday that if they allowed their two dogs to go without food and water again, they would be charged with animal cruelty.

Shortly before 10 a.m. Monday, Hawkins County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Christopher Funk responded to an animal cruelty complaint at 1619 Highway 70-N near Rogersville.

Upon his arrival, Funk allegedly found two dogs in "poor condition."

Funk stated in his report that both dogs were "tied up with no food or water."

Funk then made contact with Joseph Ray Hill, 25, and Leann Rebecca Mule, 20, both of that address.

Both admitted to owning one of the dogs each.

"Both said they are out of work and could not afford to purchase food for the animals," Funk said. "I purchased a 40-pound bag of dog food and gave it to the suspects and advised them that I would be doing a follow-up at a later date."

No charges were filed Monday against Hill and Mule, however.

"They were informed at that time that if the dogs were found to be in that condition again, charges for animal cruelty would be placed against them," Funk said.
