Two Jonesborough residents were arrested Thursday on charges that they stole at least $200,000 from two elderly people in Johnson City.

Jama Curtis, 39, and Tony Curtis, 40, both of 1412 Mill Springs Road, Jonesborough, were indicted by a Washington County grand jury after a four-month Johnson City police investigation with assistance from Tennessee Adult Protective Services and the First Judicial District Attorney General’s Office.

Police said Jama Curtis, acting as the victims' caregiver, wrote numerous fraudulent checks and withdrew money from the victims' account. Although Curtis had permission to withdraw funds for the victims' care, the investigation showed money was misappropriated to the Curtises for their own everyday expenses. Funds also were paid to a business owned by Tony Curtis for work that was never authorized or completed.
