ROGERSVILLE — A Hawkins County couple initially told police no one had fired gunshots from the rear of their home last week — one of which likely passed through a neighbor’s bathroom window and landed in her bathtub.
Several bullet-riddled items in the couples’ back yard told a different tale.
Shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday night, Hawkins County deputies were dispatched to the residence at 135 Lawson Road on a complaint of a bullet hole through the bathroom window.
Deputies reportedly found a .45 caliber bullet in the bathtub, and were informed by the complainant that neighbors often shoot from their residence.
Deputies Josh Byrd, Kenny Lunsford Jr. and Sgt. Mike Allen then went to visit the neighbors, Jayson and Michelle Jones, 121 Lawson Road, Rogersville.
Michelle Jones initially told deputies there hadn’t been anyone shooting at the residence.
After deputies observed several items in the back yard with bullet holes, however, Michelle Jones reportedly gave them permission to enter the residence.
Deputies then spoke to Jayson Jones, 25, who allegedly stated no one had been shooting, although he did admit that he is a convicted felon.
When asked if there were any firearms inside the residence Jones allegedly replied, “Not that I know of.”
Michelle Jones gave the deputies permission to search the residence for firearms, at which time they found a .45 caliber pistol in a closet. Also reported as recovered from the residence was a 30-06 caliber rifle and a variety of ammunition.
Byrd stated in his report that deputies smelled marijuana in the area of a desk, and Jones admitted there was marijuana in the desk.
Deputies allegedly seized a baggy of marijuana, a pill believed to be tramadol, and a variety of drug paraphernalia including syringes, a spoon, digital scales and a pill crusher.
Jayson Jones was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of drug paraphernalia, simple possession of marijuana, and possession of legend drugs.
He was arraigned Wednesday, released on $10,000 bond, and is set for a preliminary hearing on April 3.
Although there were no charges filed specifically related to the bullet that passed through the neighbor’s bathroom window, Sheriff Ronnie Lawson said Sunday that incident remains under investigation.
