Johnson City police arrested a man Thursday night who reportedly barricaded himself in a bathroom at a Johnson City residence and set the bathroom on fire with lighter fluid.

According to JCPD Capt. Matt Howell, an officer had noticed increased traffic at 302 W. Highland Ave. over the past month and when he drove by the residence Thursday night, a vehicle he did not recognize was parked outside.

“It turns out that ... vehicle is the owner of the house and ... his mother lives here, but she has been out of town for about a month. She’s been ill and he came by to check on the house and heard somebody inside the house, so he backed out and that’s about the same time that our officer arrived on the scene to check it,” Howell said. “We made entry and the subject that was inside the house had barricaded himself in the ... bathroom. When we attempted to make contact with him, we advised him that we would be sending a K9 unit in. He advised he would burn the K9 if it was sent in.”
