APPALACHIA — The Virginia Lottery reported Wednesday that a Wise County woman and her husband won $250,000 after taking top prize in the “Big Winning Numbers” Scratcher game.
Amy Payne, of Appalachia, was reportedly riding in the car with her husband when she scratched the ticket and realized she had won the $250,000 prize.
“We stopped in the middle of the road,” she later told Lottery officials. “I nearly had a heart attack.”
The winning ticket was purchased at the Scotchman market located at 636 West Main St., Appalachia, lottery officials said.
Payne told lottery officials that she has no immediate plans for the money, noting that she and her husband were new parents.
“Big Winning Numbers” is one of dozens of Scratchers offered by the Virginia Lottery and features prizes ranging from $5 all the way up to $250,000.
Lottery officials said Payne claimed the second top prize claimed in the game, which means three top-prize tickets still remain unclaimed.
