DUNGANNON — Authorities in Scott County are investigating a possible suspicious death after a Dungannon woman's body was found along a roadside Sunday morning.
The Scott County Sheriff's Office and Scott County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office identified the woman as Mary Kathryn Darnell, 57, of Dungannon.
A cause of death has not yet been determined, authorities said.
Darnell's body is scheduled to undergo an autopsy and toxicology tests on Tuesday in Roanoke to determine if her death could be attributed to foul play.
Scott County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Lt. Chris Holder said the discovery is being investigated as a homicide at this point.
"The autopsy and toxicology will tell us everything," Holder said. "We treat all of these cases as a homicide until we prove differently. But right now, we can't say if it's a homicide."
Although the autopsy is expected to be completed Tuesday, Holder said the toxicology results could take several weeks to come back.
Darnell's body was reportedly found by a motorist heading to work at approximately 9 a.m. on Sunday. The body was reportedly located next to a creek that runs along Ohio Street in Dungannon.
Holder said Darnell was reported as being last seen at 10 p.m. on Saturday.
Depending on the forensic test results, Holder said charges could be filed against individuals for contributing to Darnell's death if warranted by those findings.
