A Blountville man died Friday afternoon from injuries sustained the night before, when he allegedly shot his brother in the chest before turning the gun on himself.
Sullivan County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Leslie Earhart says an investigation is continuing, with detectives getting mixed accounts of what sparked the altercation.
At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, deputies were dispatched to 311 Bowman Creek Rd., where the men live with their parents. Police found David Baker, 22, had already been taken to the hospital by a friend, while EMS was called to transport Daniel Baker, 24.
According to statements gathered from two witnesses — the brothers' mother and one of their acquaintances — an argument erupted between the siblings. Daniel Baker allegedly stood up and shot David in the chest, then pointed the gun at his own head and pulled the trigger.
On Friday morning, Daniel was listed as being in critical condition at Bristol Regional Medical Center, but he died later in the day.
As of Friday afternoon, David Baker was in stable condition at Holston Valley Medical Center. An investigation into the incident is continuing.

A pair of Blountville brothers are hospitalized — one in critical condition — after an argument escalated to one allegedly shooting the other in the chest, then himself in the head.
Police have declined to label the incident as a murder-suicide attempt, saying both men involved have yet to be thoroughly interviewed by investigators.
