CHURCH HILL — A woman who accused her ex-boyfriend of burglarizing her home last month was charged with felony filing a false report after her son told police she was lying.
On the evening of Jan. 15, Church Hill Police Department Detective Kevin Grigsby responded to the home of Jennifer Lynn Hickman, 31, 939 Ragle St., on a residential burglary complaint.
Hickman allegedly told Grigsby she had been away from the home for the previous week.
Hickman allegedly stated that when she returned home, she observed the front door of the home had been forced open and damaged, and there were numerous items missing including an iPhone, clothing, groceries, jewelry, electronics, and posters — all of which she valued in excess of $1,000.
“During the course of my investigation, it became obvious that (Hickman) had filed a false report,” Grigsby said. “She listed her former boyfriend, Joshua P. Adkins, as a suspect. I was able to locate a Juvenile Court order giving Joshua temporary emergency custody of the couple’s children and giving him permission to obtain his property, as well as property of the children from Hickman’s home.”
Grigsby said he also learned that on Dec. 6, 2012, HCSO Deputy John Tunnell was attempting to serve the custody order and an arrest warrant on Hickman. Hickman allegedly refused to open the door for Tunnell, who then forced entry to same door she claimed was damaged during the burglary.
Hickman’s son, whom she shares with Adkins, also reportedly told Grigsby that Hickman had falsely accused Adkins.
Grigsby added, “The son was found to be in possession of several items including the posters and iPhone that he stated was his personal property, and that (Hickman) knew he was in possession of. (The son) stated that (Hickman) has filed this report due to the ongoing custody dispute between the parties.”
Hickman was charged Thursday with felony filing a false report and released from the Hawkins County Jail Saturday on $2,500 bond. She will be arraigned Feb. 19.
