A flood watch across the region has been extended through Thursday, when colder air is expected to swoop in and bring the potential for significant snowfall in some areas.

The National Weather Service in Morristown, Tenn., reports persistent rains will continue through early Wednesday afternoon before tapering off, then resuming Wednesday night into Thursday. Forecasters warn the continual, long duration of recent rains may lead to more flooding along waterways and low lying areas.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook issued early Wednesday morning says the storm system will produce an additional 1 to 2 inches of additional rainfall Thursday, with heavier amounts possible along the Tennessee and North Carolina state line.

Northerly winds are also expected to pull colder air into the region. High's are forecast for around the mid-40s early Thursday before falling throughout the rest of the day.

That's expected to change the rain to snow across the region. Forecasters say 4 to 8 inches of accumulation is possible in the higher elevations of Northeast, Tenn., and Southwest, Va., generally at or above 5,000 feet.
